Flash card practice: guess, test, self-assess

Install the model a few minutes a day: read the colours, say the number, keep the ones you know.

Before this, try: Multiples hunt

Slide: lay cards in a row, guess each number, take out the ones you get right.

You need: A pack of Prime Colours cards, colour side up. Start with the 14 cards from 1 to 18, then add 20–50 and 54–100.

Players: 1 or more

Goal: Know as many cards as you can, as easily as you'd like to.

Steps

  1. Lay a row of cards colour side up.
  2. Guess the number of each card.
  3. If you're right, take the card out.
  4. If not, put that card at the end of the row, still colour side up.
  5. Keep going until every card is out.
  6. Record how you did, and plan which cards to practise next time.

A little, often

This is the habit that makes the model stick: 1 to 3 minutes, at least once a day. Once the cards are learnt, they stay learnt.

Self-assess

After each round, sort the cards into: know it instantly, can work it out, not yet. Use the record book to track which cards move across over a week.
